Here They Come! California-Based Trial Lawyers Form Committee to Support Prop 201 With 201's Passage, Trial Lawyers Win and Consumers Lose
PHOENIX – A California-based trial lawyer firm has filed a last minute political committee in support of Prop 201 and has purchased TV ads on Arizona cable systems.
"It was only a matter of time before California trial lawyers made their formal appearance on the Arizona political stage," said Spencer Kamps, chairman of 'Arizonans Against Lawsuit Abuse', the committee opposed to Prop 201. "As we have been telling voters throughout this campaign, Prop 201 will be a lawsuit bonanza for out-of-state trial lawyers. With this new committee, we now know for certain who the wizard is behind the curtain."
"Coalition for Better Construction" was formed by Doug Lusson, Chairman and Stephen Lee Weber, Treasurer. Both Lusson and Weber are with the California-based construction defect law firm of Kasdan Simonds Riley & Vaughan. Lusson is an associate and Weber is a partner with the firm. The firm's web page boasts that some of its attorneys are "the leading construction defect lawyers in California." The firm maintains its head office in Southern California with offices in Irvine, Concord, Palmdale, and in Phoenix.
"One can only assume that Kasdan Simonds wants to use Prop 201 as a pay-day for its partners and associates. Why else would they get involved?" Kamps stated. "Because 201 casts aside Arizona's common sense mediation statute, consumers' only recourse to settle disputes will be to file lawsuits. Trial lawyers win, consumers lose. It's that simple."
Prop 201 was drafted in secret by a San Francisco trial lawyer without legal review or any open public hearings. In fact, 99% of this Prop's funding has come from out-of-state interests and Big Labor.
